The Artist
A Robert WIlliams painting is an invitation to romance. Each sunlit scene has a fresh delicacy that relies equally on composition and color. His works portray understated elegance and a relaxed atmosphere. The lack of complexity of each element--light, shadow, color, composition creates the mood , one of wholesome delight. Williams says he is a simple person who paints what he sees, "A few hours with me and you know me." He relates in his calm, quiet manner. " I try to recreate a feeling of idealism in my art, a sense of romance and playfulness. My intention is to capture the calm and peacefulness of the moment through the use of light and color. Ultimately, the use of light is what motivates me as an artist." Robert Williams is a modern day Impressionist. He is a native Californian, raised on the island of Catalina. His early carefree days near the shore have left an indelible imprint on his art style. Long recognized for his sun-drenched beach scenes of women and children at play on the sand and in the surf, his paintings express a timelessness, sensuality and great tranquility.

There is great assurance in the paintings of Robert Williams. He applies paint in a sensuous, tactile manner, conveyed through rich surface impasto that appears to set his canvases aglow with brilliant light, rich color and deep shadows, expressing an overwhelming sense of the joy of life. The artist is passionate about his work. Though physically large and imposing, he is sensitive, calm and quietly assured. His sense of virtue seems inseparable from his art.

Inspired by the works of Monet , Sargent, Sorolla and heavily influenced by the American impressionist William Merrit Chase, Robert Williams furthered a painting style known as California Impressionism. His radiant use of light; subject and powerful coloring techniques demonstrate unparalleled talent and sensitivity.

After studying at the renowned Chouinard Art Institute, Williams was sought by major Hollywood movie studios, including MGM and Universal, to design scenic art. In 1980, he was signed by Walt Disney Studios where he designed innovative murals and scenery. For more than thirty years, his artwork has been his life's passion and his work shows in innumerable national and private collections. Over the past two decades, the art of Robert Williams has been presented at more than 200 exhibitions.
